A few years back I went to see Daniel Pink speak at Harvard, discussing his book: “Drive: The Suprising Truth About What Motivates Us”. He discussed how we are driven by being a part of something creative…something bigger than us. This statement has always stayed with me, and I find it so true. Today, I had a great business planning session with a friend. Brain storming sessions are so inspiring, even if it is for someone elses business. However, I believe that everything comes back to you, and success in her business, Inspired Style Events will in some way lead to success in my life. It’s Karma. It’s the Law of Attraction.
Our conversation went in the direction that so many do, “when you follow your heart, success will come.” It seems the people I know who clearly enjoy what they are doing, inevitably become succesful at it. Usually, their main goal isn’t to make that all-mighty dollar, but to share their passion with others, to make others better. The money will follow. The minute you start doing things solely to make money, the passion will noticeably fade, and in turn ….so will the income.
Two young ladies that seem to be a fine example of this theory are Rachel Chemerynski creator of Healthy Chicks and Caitlin from Cate Plus Ate. These are ladies who will only continue to be successful, as they are clearly doing what they love!
My girlfriends passion is Event Planning, and she just made a huge decision, allowing herself to pursue this passion/career. Like any small business owner, she obviously is a little anxious/nervous about the future. Those first few months are scary. I know. My advice: create a clear VISION of where you want this business to be in 6 months/1/3/5 years. Once this vision is clear, go after it with all your heart. If you do this, failure is not an option.
When first starting our business, a good friend sat down with my brother and I and talked to us about vision. One thing she said stuck with me throughout our growing phases, and helped in so many big decisions about the business. She said to have such a clear idea of what you want your business to look like that it will make every decision about the business easy. Even if someone comes to you with an opportunity that looks very lucrative, if it doesn’t fall into your vision you need to decline. I am so happy she said this, because I feel like I can now use it in every aspect of my life.
Have a clear vision of what you want your business, relationships, and life to look like. Make sure it is YOUR vision, and not what others may expect or want from you. Write this vision down, and truely see it. Feel it. Become it.
“Give to us clear vision that we may know where to stand and what to stand for – because unless we stand for something, we shall fall for anything.” -Peter Marshall
“Where there is no vision, there is no hope.” -George Washington Carver
“Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakens.” -Carl Jung
“You must first clearly see a thing in your mind before you can do it.” -Alex Morrison
